Artificial Intelligence in general, and Large Language Models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT and Gemini, have become ubiquitous. People are using AI for all kinds of tasks. But can a machine really interpret our lives, and provide insights through the lens of astrology?

This is a non-trivial question that I will attempt to answer here:

Producing an astrology reading can be viewed as consisting of two parts:

• Astrometrics: Determining the positions of relevant planets and heavenly bodies at various times of interest, such as our birth, or the time of an important event in our lives. This requires accurate astronomic measurements and calculations.
• Interpretation: Having determined the relevant astrometrics, it is the task of an expert astrologer to interpret these observations into actionable insights. This requires deep knowledge of an astrological tradition.

LLMs can sometimes perform some mathematical calculations, but are notoriously error-prone when doing so. Moreover, it is unlikely that an LLM has access to all the latest astronomic measurements that are required.

However, LLMs are very adept at digesting large amounts of textual information, such as those texts that define an astrological tradition.

For this reason, it is best to use traditional astronomy to arrive at the required astrometric observations (i.e. where the planets are). Then, the AI can be reliably used to interpret these, using its vast knowledge of Vedic astrology.
